Two clauses do most of the practical work in a freelance agreement, and neither is dramatic.
Ownership transfers on payment in full. This is quietly the strongest leverage you have over an unpaid invoice, because the client cannot legitimately use the work while it is outstanding. You rarely have to invoke it — but knowing it is there changes how the conversation goes.
Liability is limited to the fee paid. Without a cap, a small project can in principle expose you to losses far exceeding what you earned from it.
Everything in this section varies by jurisdiction, sometimes enormously — restrictive covenants in particular are heavily restricted or unenforceable for contractors in several places. Nothing here is legal advice or has been reviewed by a lawyer. For valuable IP or anything you could not afford to lose, take local advice.

Answered
Do freelancers need an NDA?
Less often than people assume. For most freelance work a confidentiality clause inside your contract is sufficient. A standalone NDA makes most sense when sensitive information is exchanged before any contract exists, such as when pitching a distinctive approach.
Can I show NDA work in my portfolio?
Only if the agreement allows it, and many do not by default. Ask for a carve-out permitting you to display completed deliverables after public launch, excluding confidential business information. Most clients agree when asked at signing; very few will reopen the agreement later.
When should IP ownership transfer to the client?
On payment in full, stated in your contract rather than in an NDA. You should also retain ownership of pre-existing materials, tools, templates and any concepts the client did not select, so a broadly worded assignment clause does not hand over the reusable assets your business runs on.
