A scope of work is the document you agree before the project starts. It records what you are delivering, in what format, by when, for how much — and, in the section most freelancers leave out, what you are not delivering.

That last part is where most of the value sits. Almost every dispute a freelancer has with a client traces back to something that was assumed rather than written down. A client asking for "just one more page" is not being difficult if nothing ever said how many pages there were.

The guides below cover the full template, the section-by-section writing guide, and the distinction between a scope of work and a statement of work.

Common Questions

Answered

What should be included in a scope of work?

Seven parts cover almost every freelance project: project overview, deliverables, exclusions, timeline and milestones, client responsibilities, revision rounds, and payment terms. The exclusions section is the one most freelancers omit and the one that prevents the most disputes.

How long should a scope of work be?

One to two pages for most freelance projects. Long enough to be specific about deliverables and exclusions, short enough that the client actually reads it — a client who has not read the scope behaves exactly like one who never received it.

Do I need a scope of work if I already have a contract?

Yes. A contract governs the legal relationship — payment, liability, ownership, termination. A scope of work governs the project itself. Most freelance disputes are not about legal terms; they are about what was and was not included in the work.
